Drone flight videos of the Lake District

The Lake District has been a source of artistic inspiration for centuries. Over the years we’ve seen artwork and photography galore. But flying over the Lakes in the ethereal early morning is quite something else, and gives a sense of the grand scale of the region.

Phil Royal of Misty Mountain UK is a Cockermouth-based photographer and videographer who captures the landscapes, seasons and weathers of the Lake District in spectacular motion. Much of his work is around Keswick and the Northern Lake District, at iconic locations such as Blencathra, Borrowdale and Castlerigg Stone Circle. He’s been kind enough to share a couple of his Lake District videos with us to enjoy.

Early mornings drone flights over the Lake District

Early morning in the Lake District is unbelievably beautiful. The sun rises behind the mountains, casting their shapes in shadowy relief. Mist often hangs low in the valleys, creating an ethereal scene, and the peace and quiet is exquisite.

Phil has captured all the best parts of morning in various parts of the Lake District with this video. From a sea of low cloud over Keswick and Derwentwater, under a fiery sky of sunrise-orange, to a crisp frosty morning in St John’s in the Vale, where the trees are painted white with frost.

Lake District Inversions

Inversions are an atmospheric phenomena where temperature gradients cause cooler air to be trapped beneath warmer layers, creating an otherworldly spectacle.

While in the valleys the morning can seem overcast and misty, it’s possible to climb through the ‘clouds’ and emerge into a completely different world with sparkling sunshine and clear blue skies. The Lake District peaks emerge from the cloud layer like islands in an alien sea, with occasional forest tree tops punctuating the still, silent mists.

In Phil Royal’s drone flight video over the Lake District fells he captures one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles, only truly appreciated from above.

The Dawn Chorus

The great advantage of video over imagery is that it awakens other senses by capturing not only the sights of the Lake District, but also the sound.

Few sounds are more evocative than the early-morning chorus of birds during the spring. It’s a reminder that winter is well and truly over for another year. Longer nights, warmer days and brighter evenings are here. The Dawn Chorus is special enough when heard from our gardens or our bedroom windows, but when you’re also surrounded by the unrivalled scenery of the Lake District, it’s truly breathtaking.

Listen out for a cacophony of joyful bird twitters, cheeps and tweets over the undisturbed waters of Derwentwater, Buttermere, Bassenthwaite Lake and more. Other birds add in their own unique sounds – the unmistakable rapid tat-tat-tat of a woodpecker and honking cries of geese join the choir.
