The Cumberland Pencil Museum
Where is it? : Southey Works, Main Street, Keswick – just off the town centre
Telephone 017687 73626
We like it because : as well as looking at the exhibitions and learning about the history and how the pencils are made you get to use the products the factory makes. Best bit – the Kid’s Art Studio for drawing and colouring.
What’s it all about? : It’s a museum and a crafts studio in one. This was the first ever pencil factory in the UK, using graphite mined in Borrowdale. The Kid’s Art Studio has lots of the special pencils they make here and paper and colouring sheets, all of which you can use, and there are also drawing and colouring competitions to enter and step by step drawing projects to have a go at.
Also look out for : The online drawing and colouring projects to download from the Pencil Museum website. Also the family fun days on at various times during the year.
Tips : The shop here has the biggest range of derwent pencils anywhere and if you get a family membership pass you get 10% off anything you buy here.
How much is it? : Under 5 – free. 5 to 16 – £3.25. Grown ups – £4.25. Family – £11.75 (2 grown ups 3 kids). Family membership pass – £17.50 (entry to museum for 12 months & 10% off in retail shop)
