Historical Roots

Founded over 200 years ago, Hayes Garden World began as a small nursery dedicated to cultivating and selling plants. In 1921, the business relocated to its current site on Lake Road in Ambleside, operating under the name “Lake District Nurseries.” The 1960s marked a significant transformation as the nursery embraced the garden centre model, expanding its offerings to include a diverse array of gardening and lifestyle products. This evolution culminated in the establishment of the renowned “Crystal Palace” in 1987, a stunning architectural feature that continues to captivate visitors.

Landscaping Legacy

The Hayes family’s influence on garden design extends beyond the Lake District, with their work celebrated on both national and royal stages. In 1925, Mr. T.R. Hayes designed the Dutch borders and rockery at the National Trust owned Sizergh Castle, combining formal planting with naturalistic features. Earlier, in 1904, the family undertook the creation of the Japanese water garden at Lowther Castle for Lord Lonsdale, incorporating imported trees, curved bridges, and reflective pools inspired by traditional Japanese design. This work, though obscured in later years, has been partially restored, allowing visitors to appreciate its original beauty.

Thomas Richard Hayes was also celebrated for his striking garden displays at national flower shows. At the 1924 Chelsea Flower Show, his innovative garden design drew the attention of King George V and Queen Mary, who personally commended his work. His royal connections, however, began decades earlier. In 1887, during Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, he was entrusted with the honor of designing and presenting a ceremonial bouquet, cementing his reputation as a leading horticulturist of his time.
