Holme Farm is a traditional dales working farm. The main enterprise is hill sheep, with a small herd of hill suckler cows. There are twelve different breeds of traditional cattle, which have been farmed in the area for the past half-century. A number of different breeds of goat and sheep are kept on the farm for added interest of the visitor. Several types and breeds of poultry roam around the farmyard.
The emphasis of the open farm is that children can touch hold and feed as many baby animals as possible. The various activities of normal farm work are used in demonstrations to explain the methods of food production.
A Roman road runs through the farmyard, and fords the River Rawthey. Close by are remains of an ancient stone age village. Nearby is an area of special wildlife interest including many types of orchid. There is a huge diversity of natural history on the farm itself, including foxes, badgers, herons, dippers, woodpeckers and oystercatchers.
There is a Holme Farm Nature Trail, of approximately 1.25 miles, where you can see the animals and birds just mentioned.
