Places to Eat in Gilcrux

For such a small sleepy village Gilcrux is well served by two excellent village Inns, and several takeaways deliver. Cockermouth, just 15 minutes away, has numerous cafes, restaurants and takeaways.

Edit: The Barn Inn has closed its doors, the future use of the Inn is currently uncertain.

Gilcrux Pubs

Two very friendly pubs, the Mason’s Arms and the Barn Inn, are in the centre of Gilcrux village. They are almost opposite each other and are set well back from the quiet road, towards the narrower end of the ancient Green. Both have wood burners and beer gardens and both are dog friendly.

The Mason’s Arms, Gilcrux

The Mason’s Arms serves delicious food a good notch above the usual pub fare. Centuries old, with reclaimed ships’ timbers in its structure, the village pub is run by Andy and Hal. As well as a well stocked bar and real ales there is a pool table, darts, cards, dominoes, Yahtzee and many other games. Pet friendly.

Andy and Hal Peverley previously ran the Barn Bistro (see below) and the village was absolutely delighted that they returned, after a brief absence, to take over the Mason’s Arms.

Andy is a talented chef who has a certain “touch”, bringing the best out of the ingredients. As well as an excellent and varied main menu she serves delicious Sunday lunches and there are also weekly specials on the blackboard. All dietary requirements can be catered for.

Newcastle-born Hal presides over the Bar and serves an excellent selection of draught real ales. There is also an extensive selection of malt whiskies and gins and a good wine list.

The Barn Inn, Gilcrux

Edit: The Barn Inn has closed its doors, the future use of the Inn is currently uncertain.

The new landlords of the Barn Inn, Gilcrux, are Kevin Rees and Mark Palmer-Rees.

Previously the ‘Barn Bistro’ this very popular establishment opened under the new management on Saturday 12th March 2022 with a Grand Opening Night featuring live music.

The Barn Inn website offers real ales, good wine, great home cooked food and a friendly atmosphere. Extended ‘happy hours’ and frequent live music nights are popular.

The Barn Inn is open 7 days a week from 12 midday until late.
