Marking 1900 years since the commencement of the building of Hadrian’s Wall in AD122, To the Edges of Empire features beautiful and important objects to explore the role of locations and people across the Roman Empire during Hadrian’s reign.
Key objects include loans from the British Museum, National Museums Scotland and The Fitzwilliam Museum, showcasing objects from the regions now known as North Africa, Syria, Germany and Eastern Europe.
The importance of Britain during the time of Hadrian is explored by the awe-inspiring Newstead facemask on loan from National Museums Scotland and the return of the fascinating Ilam Pan, one of the earliest souvenirs from Hadrian’s Wall.
