Soup Talks: Sarah Staton – Form, Function & Feeling

Join sculptor and tutor Sarah Staton as she discusses her work over the past 40 years – from YBA to the Royal College and her 2021 exhibition Supastore.

In this fascinating talk, Sarah will explore the social potentials of art, drawing on her experience of making public commissions and where and how the public realm allows art to become useful. She will locate her work within a legacy of ideas around the dignity of work that has been celebrated in the UK’s Arts and Crafts movement, Chicago School and Bauhaus. Sarah will also explore the sociability of sculpture as an artform and the potentials for flux and flow between both art and craft forms. She will also touch on her fascination with the correspondences in working methods for different materials.

Sarah joins us as part of our Wednesday night ‘Soup Talks’ series during which we host locals or people passing through the area to share their stories and expertise with a captive audience over a bowl of homemade soup! Often illustrated, each talk lasts approximately 40 minutes with time for questions and informal chat. The Stable Bar is open for drinks before and after the talk and those with tickets, get 10% off on the night.

Venue: The Farmer’s Arms, Lowick Green, Nr Ulverston, LA12 8DT

Tickets: £5 for the talk only | £10 for the talk with a bowl of homemade soup and a wedge of focaccia bread.
