Shadowlands by Peter Robson

Venue: Hallbankgate Hub, Hallbankgate, Brampton, CA8 2NJ

Hexham based artist, Peter Robson, is a surrealist who tackles big subjects in his art. Politics, war, exploitation, man’s inhumanity in the name of progress are topics that feature strongly. His work explores themes around inequality, the senselessness of war and seeks to provoke questions in the viewer.

Peter predominantly paints in water colours finding it lends itself to a speed of thought which fits well with his work. He is influenced by German expressionism, surrealism and Nordic noir. He has been involved in social issues and considers himself an activist. He has never tried to separate this from his art and believes that the artist has a duty and responsibility to represent what is happening in our world.

‘Shadowlands’ portrays the gritty realities of our industrial heritage, capturing industry from the past that now appears ghost-like, leaving shadows littered across our landscapes, lost in the mist of time. With his unique style and distinctive colour palette, his work underlines the darker aspects of the pursuit of glory, profit and power and the race for progress – too often glossed over in the swipe right era of our digital age.
