The fateful moment when Carmen throws her cards into the air gave British artist Es Devlin the idea for her stage design for this production, incorporating the waters of Lake Constance behind the spectacular water stage.
The enormous playing cards double as performing areas for singers, dancers, stuntmen and smugglers and the projections on their surface conjure up the different worlds of bullfighting, cartomancy and passionate love.
The title rôle of the gypsy factory worker from Seville is sung by suitably smoky mezzo Gaelle Arquez, with tenor Daniel Johansson in the rôle of Don José, her soldier lover. Filmed live in summer 2017.
Sung in French with English subtitles.
