Bushcraft at Whinlatter Forest

Where is it? : Whinlatter Visitor Centre – in between Cockermouth and Keswick
Run by Keswick Canoe & Bushcraft –  Telephone 07944 735 010 or 07950 559 623

We like this because :  What’s not to like about lighting camp fires, whittling with penknives, building “dens”, toasting marshmallows and roasting fish and fowl – all in the forest?

What’s it all about? : All very Ray Mears –  Keswick Canoe & Bushcraft run various half days teaching fun but serious bushcraft skills in the brilliant Whinlatter Forest (think Fangorn rather than Lothlorien).

Tips : You need an adult (18+) with you for all the below. These fun sessions are very popular and booking is essential.

You can choose from –

  • Full Day Introduction to Bushcraft age 10+
  • Nettles, Firebread and Wild Rabbit Campfire Cooking age 12+
  • Shelter Build, Flint & Steel & Toasted Marshmallows age 6+
  • Fish and Feather Wild food prep and campfire cooking age 12+
and, for the less bloodthirsty or pyromaniac, there’s also

  • Spoon Carving age 12+

It’s hard to find somewhere you are allowed to light campfires in the wild Lake District and this teaches you both how to do it safely – and that is Sooo important here –  and properly, the survival way.
