Birdoswald Roman Fort
Location Gilsland
Birdoswald Roman Fort is the perfect place to see the longest continuous remaining stretch of this magnificent World Heritage Site, Hadrian’s Wall.
Birdoswald is located in one of the most picturesque settings along the whole of Hadrian’s Wall, overlooking the River Irthing gorge. It is unique because at no other point along the wall can all the components of the Roman Frontier system be found in such a small area.
Here you can explore the extensive remains of the Roman fort and discover interactive displays, artefacts and a model of the wall in a fascinating exhibition.
A new bridge has been constructed which crosses the River Irthing and allows people to follow the wall to Willowford, where there is almost a mile of the best preserved western sector of the wall.
With delicious locally made cakes and treats in the tearoom, this is the ideal place to stop and relax while walking or cycling along Hadrian’s Wall in Cumbria.
Birdoswald Farmhouse, situated in the grounds of Birdoswald Roman Fort and within metres of Hadrian’s Wall, is available to hire. The 39 bed Farmhouse is ideal for group accommodation which includes walking groups, school parties, Girlguiding UK, Scouts or large groups of families or friends.
The site is managed by English Heritage.
