It runs all year except for Christmas and Boxing day, and takes about 10 minutes to cross the centre of Windermere from Ferry Nab just south of Bowness to Ferry House at Far Sawrey. The service is run by the Highways Dept of Cumbria County Council.

Following major service disruption in 2018 the ferry service has now been resumed.

However Cumbria County Council have announced that it will be out of service for three weeks from Monday the 4th of March 2019. This is for its five-yearly inspection and refit. It is anticipated that services will resume from Saturday, March the 30th 2019. Note: normal service has now resumed.
