Sailing & Windsurfing in the Lake District & Cumbria
The best known and most popular lakes for sailing and windsurfing are Windermere and Derwentwater, both with a good variety of marinas, boat and board hire and instructors, however both Bassenthwaite Lake and Ullswater are also very well regarded for watersports and some of the smaller waters such as Coniston are also now providing interesting options. RYA qualifications and courses are offered and there are also sailing clubs on these lakes.
On the Cumbrian coast both Maryport and Whitehaven have good marinas just off the pretty, traditional fishing harbours. These are very popular with sailors from across the north of England who enjoy the lower fees and more laid back atmosphere along with beautiful sailing along the western English and Scottish coasts.
