In 1998 Whitehaven was awarded a large Millenium grant towards phase two of
'The Renaissance of Whitehaven' project. Phase one, to create 10 hectares of permanent waterspace
by enclosing the harbour with a lock, was officially opened by
John Prescott, deputy Prime Minister, on Friday October 9th 1998. This brought a marina,
additional water based activities, and improved fishing industry facilities.
The second phase themes were the celebration of Whitehaven's historic role as a major maritime gateway
to the UK on the West Coast, and its trading links with other nations, and
the establishment of the harbour as a major community, cultural and sporting
venue, with complimentary wet weather facilities.
The control centre for the lock gates has been designed to match
The Beacon, Whitehaven's principal tourist attraction, nearby,
where you can learn more about the history of the harbour and shipbuilding in Whitehaven.
