On saturday 24th Feb 2007 the 'Cumbrian Coast Pullman' travelled from Manchester, via Barrow-in-Furness up the West Cumbrian coast, stopping for water at Workington, then continuing to Carlisle. Usually main line rolling stock is not allowed north of Maryport due to the narrowness of the bridges, and this is the first steam hauled trip on this line for many years.
The Railway Touring Company of Kings Lynn ran the Cumbrian Pullman from Manchester to Carlisle and back, using the restored BR standard class 8 Duke of Gloucester, no 71000. On the outward journey it ran as planned along the Furness Line and the Cumbrian Coast line, with crowds of people along the line photographing and filming the steam express engine.
Instead of returning down the main line over Shap, which was blocked with wreckage from the derailed Virgin Pendolino London to Glasgow train, which crashed the previous friday night at Grayrigg, near Oxenholme, the steam-hauled train returned back down the coast line.
The train was full with 288 Pullman passengers, some of whom paid £164 for the trip and a three-course meal.
A similar trip was made, also in bad weather, on saturday March 10th 2007, with the train returning via Hexham, Durham, and the ECML, as the WCML was still closed following the Grayrigg Pendolino derailment, and the Settle & Carlisle was also closed for engineering work.
It was pleasing to see all the Pullman coaches had names of Cumbrian lakes.
71000 was a unique variant of the Britannia class British Railways passenger express locomotives. Errors during building prevented her from achieving design performance. These errors in the firebox and blast tube were corrected during initial conservation, revealing the most powerful steam locomotive ever to run on UK railways, a short head in front of its close ancestor the LMS Princess Coronation Class.
