The Rum Story - the Dark Spirit of Whitehaven, is set in the original shop, courtyards, cellars and bonded warehouses of the Jefferson family business, in the Georgian town of Whitehaven. Here you can find out about the story of the UK rum trade, which originally centered on the port of Whitehaven.

The journey starts in the Caribbean rainforest and graphically depicts the story of rum, bringing to life the slave trade, American prohibition, rum in the Royal Navy, rum in history, the process of rum making and more. Facing on to Lowther Street is an authentic Georgian Wine Merchant's shop front (top), complete with many of the original fittings and items of interest from the Jefferson's business. You can also view the original clerks office, which has been sensitively and accurately restored, with its high desks and stools, old safe and hand-written records.

The Rum Story

The Rum Story The Courtyard Cafe is open to everyone whether you are visiting the exhibition or just fancy a morning coffee or afternoon tea.

There is an extensive menu with a variety of specials each day.

Within the courtyard is the amazing 'Kinetic Clock' (left), which every half-hour, graphically depicts the way rum is made - from the harvesting of sugar cane to the bottling of the rum.

There is a gift shop, where you can get reminders of your visit and unusual presents. There are miniature barrels, hematite statuettes of the Boy on a Capstan sculpture on the Sugar Tongue, tall ship replicas, 'Made in Cumbria' products, and more.

The Jefferson office, which you can visit, was used as Mr Heelis' office in the film Miss Potter.
