Bankhead Estate, Haverigg, LA18 4NA. Tel 01229 772636

Location : Haverigg / Millom
Map - Ordnance Survey - SD 144792

RAF Millom at Haverigg began mountain rescues in 1941, and along with RAF Llandwrog in Wales was the co-birthplace of RAF Mountain Rescue Services. The last operational flight was in 1953, after which the site and buildings had a variety of uses.

The RAF Museum, which originated in 1992 houses a fast-growing collection of memorabilia of various types. There is an archive of over 3000 photographs showing the history of the site, and a large section illustrating the history of RAF Walney no 10 Air Gunnery School. There are several aero engines, including a Rolls Royce Merlin, and a Rolls Royce Avon jet engine.

A Westland Whirlwind WM660 helicopter, as used in mountain rescues, has been extensively restored. There are many items on display that have been recovered by excavating World War II aircraft wreck sites. An example of the HM14, or 'Flying Flea', which was built locally has been restored in the nearby Haverigg Prison's much aclaimed Aircraft Restoration Workshop. There are the cockpits of a de Havilland Vampire T11 and a Jet Provost.
