No 19/20 Irish Street is an imposing High Renaissance Italianate building of national importance, as it is a rare tribute to fine early 19th Century architecture.
The architect was Sydney Smirke, who also designed the buildings of the Wellington Pit and the Candlestick Chimney.
The building bears a close resemblance to the Oxford and Cambridge Club in Pall Mall, London, designed by Sydney and Robert Smirke.
After serving many years as offices for Copeland Borough Council, the building is now used as a doctors' surgery.
