Eskdale is the valley, stretching from Gosforth, near Seascale on the West coast of Cumbria, through to the foot of Hard Knott pass, and contains the small villages of Santon Bridge, Boot and Eskdale Green.

It is very popular with tourists, being close to Scafell - England's highest mountain.

The valley is notable as being one of few major valleys in the Lake District not to have its own lake, although several tarns are perched above the valley sides.

The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway passses through Eskdale on its route from Ravenglass on the coast, to Dalegarth near the village of Boot.

There is an ancient mill, art galleries, waterfalls, the River Esk winding its way through the valley, several pubs and inns, plenty of places to stay, and fantastic countryside for walks, some of which are descibed on David Hall's website listed below.

Hard Knott Roman Fort

Hard Knott Roman Fort, one of the loneliest outposts of the Roman Empire, built between AD120 and AD138 is on a spectacular site overlooking the pass which forms part of the Roman road from Ravenglass to Ambleside and Brougham at Penrith.

Hard Knott Fort is near the Eskdale end of Hard Knott Pass which, with Wrynose Pass, connects Eskdale with central Lakeland (one of the most thrilling and challenging drives in Lakeland!)
