In the past Crosby was both a farming and, in the 19th century, a mining village (pits in the past at Rosegill and Bullgill), with dwellings situated around village greens. Since then the village has expanded and there are fewer farms.

Edderside
Edderside.

Edderside is a farming hamlet with a duck pond, about 1½ miles inland from the main coast road, about a mile north of Allonby. It has been called the Hawkshead of the Solway Plain. Like its Lakeland counterpart, it has a long, fascinating history and many fine examples of vernacular architecture. See Holme St Cuthbert History Group for more information, including how NOT to get there. See also A potted history of Edderside.

Hayton Castle.

Hayton Castle is a simple rectangular house, with windows from three periods - 15th Century, Elizabethan and Georgian. There are very thick walls, and tunnel vaulting in the basement - suggesting a fortified house.
