Day 2: Barden Bridge (Drebley) - Grassington: 9.55 miles
We set off in lovely sunny weather to enjoy a second day’s excellent walk. The Way took us across a mixture of woodland and pasture land as we weaved in and out along the riverbank. We were pleased to find a convenient stopping place for lunch at Burnsall which vindicated our decision not to carry a packed lunch. The attractive information board revealed local connections with the Way but it was clear that campers were not welcome!
The river itself coursed through a rich variety of limestone rock of which Loup Scar just beyond Burnsall provided a dramatic setting for youths to jump into the river. We were becoming accustomed to criss-crossing the Wharfe and a narrow bouncy suspension bridge thrilled some of us more than others! We resisted the opportunity to use the generous stepping stones to deviate to Linton to visit the ancient Church of St Michael and All Angels, and instead we pressed on to our destination of Grassington. Here our comfortable B&B (Craven Cottage) was very conveniently located at the top of the main street directly on route for the following day. We had afternoon tea at one of the numerous cafes and then after a short rest we sauntered down to The Black Horse for an enjoyable evening meal. So far things were going well!
