'Casterton - Holy Trinity Church'

Holy Trinity Church at Casterton, a few miles from Kirkby Lonsdale, was commissioned in 1833 by the founder of the nearby Casterton School.

The most striking features, apart from the stained glass windows, are the unusual wall paintings. These are not murals, but painted in canvas, and fixed to the walls. Those on the north and south walls of the nave are by James Clarke RA (1858-1943), and those on the chancel arch, and at the back of the church are by Henry Holiday, who is also the artist responsible for the windows.

The West Wall windows, at the back of the church, have been described as amongst the best of Henry Holiday's work. The designs were first used in Grace Church, Utica, USA, and also in two of the three lancets of the West window of Southwark Cathedral, London.
