A Short Night Walk – Keswick

An easy short walk from the centre of Keswick or Lakeside Car Park by the Theatre by the Lake to Friar’s Crag looking down the length of Derwentwater lake.
Approximately half a mile walk.
You will require a torch towards the end of the trail but most of the path is level – although very slightly rougher ground towards the end.
On the way past the Boat Landings and through the trees listen for the Tawney Owls. Females’ calls sound like ‘kewick’ and males’ calls ‘hoohoo’.
At the end of the trail there is a viewing point (with a bench) that looks down the length of Derwentwater into the dark of the Borrowdale Valley and on still starry nights is an excellent spot for star gazing.

  • Starting at the Moot Hall in the centre of Keswick walk up the right hand side of the square and on to Lake Road.
  • Turn right on Lake Road and through the Underpass (see Map)
  • Follow the path on the other side of the Underpass that bears slightly to the left, there is no need to cross any road here. This path will take you along the side of the Park to the Boat Landings. You will see the Theatre by the Lake on your left as you pass.
  • Take the level path just above the Boat Landings and continue to Friar’s Crag and the viewing point.
