'Anthony Salvin'

Sir Nikolaus Pevsner described Anthony Salvin (1799-1881) as 'the most successful restorer
and purveyor of castles in the 2nd half of the 19th Century.' He came from a Durham family, and
went to London, where he became a pupil of John Nash. He then started his own practice
which lasted for some 60 years, where he became an expert in medieval fortifications, building
and altering over 73 country houses.
He did much restoration work on Windsor Castle, and the Jewel House at The Tower of London.
When building a new structure, such as Peckforton Castle in Cheshire, he created something as
dramatic and powerful as a medieval castle might have been. His most attractive and interesting
work is Harlaxton Manor,
in Lincolnshire, in the Elizabethan and Jacobean style.

Salvin was elected a fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1836, became
vice-president in 1839 and in 1863 the Institute conferred it's gold medal on him.
Salvin also designed or reworked several other houses
in Cumbria, which are not open to the public.
The book 'Anthony Salvin: Pioneer of Gothic Revival Architecture' by Jill Allibone,
is a full-length study of the life and work of a leading domestic architect of the Victorian era,
illustrated with original pictures, plans and photographs, and containing a full catalogue

Dear Mr Salvin by Anne Bonney is the story of the building of the 19th Century
Church of All Saints in Ulverston, Cumbria. The book contains the text of many letters between the Clerk
of Works and the architect, Anthony Salvin, giving as complete a picture as possible of the
building of a 19th Century 'Commissioners Church', and the many problems encountered.
