Just west from the A6, near Shap, Wet Sleddale Reservoir, like Haweswater was constructed to supply Manchester with a supply of fresh water. The valley in which it is located once belonged to Shap Abbey.

Public access to the reservoir is by footpath from a car park at the end of the dam. Excess water from the dam goes into the River Lowther.

In the cult 1987 film 'Withnail and I' 'Crow Cragg', where Withnail and Marwood end up 'on holiday by mistake', is Sleddale Hall, a derelict cottage, dating from at least 1802, alongside Wet Sleddale Reservoir.
