'Gamblesby'

Set in beautiful rolling countryside between the spectacular Lakeland fells and the majestic North Pennines lies the unspoilt picturesque settlement of Gamblesby. Characterised by a tiny green surrounded by 18th century red sandstone buildings.

This small farming community, sitting under the Hartside escarpment, once played host to John Wesley, founder of Methodism, who arrived here from Newcastle in 1772. He built a chapel here in 1784, which was replaced in 1864.

Another church, St John, was built in 1868 in the late 13th century style.

There is a set of stocks on the village green, made at the end of the 18th Century, and last used to punish someone who had stolen a turnip.

There is a a network of footpaths linking Gamblesby with other little villages around the valley. Nearby is Alston, England's highest market town.
