Crosby Ravensworth - Ewe Close Settlement.

Ewe Close is a prehistoric village settlement, on a stretch of moorland about 2 miles from Crosby Ravensworth village. There are earthworks covering three or four acres of ground, consisting of irregular squares, circles, etc., formed of earth thrown up to the height of from one to three feet.

It is believed to date from the iron age and also to have been occupied in Roman times.

For full details of the most recent excavations and finds, with plans, see reports on “A Romano-British settlement at Ewe Close, Crosby Ravensworth,” by W. G. Collingwood, F.S.A., (1907-8) Transactions, Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, N.S., vols. viii. and ix.)
