Eden is a local government district in East Cumbria, England. Its council is based in Penrith.
It has an area of 2,156 kmē, making it the fourth largest council district in England. It also has the lowest population density of any English district, with a mean of just 24 persons per square kilometre.
It is named after The River Eden which flows north through the district toward Carlisle.
The West Coast Main Railway Line runs through the district but with only one station at Penrith. The Settle-Carlisle Railway also goes through the district and has stations at Armathwaite, Lazonby, Langwathby, Appleby and Kirkby Stephen.
The main trunk roads are the M6 motorway running north-south, and the A66 running east-west, both through Penrith. The A686 from Penrith to Corbridge has been described by the AA as one of their 'Ten Great Drives'.

Ainstable, near Armathwaite, was a Viking settlement with the original name 'Einstapli' meaning 'a bracken-covered hillside'. Norsemen cleared much of the birch-scrub east of the Eden to the fellside. John Leake, born here in 1729, was known as the 'Man-Midwife' and wrote many books on childbirth and women's diseases. He founded the Westminster Lying-in Hospital near Westminster Bridge. He died in 1792 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
The Eden Valley Woollen Mill is located in Ainstable.
