'Penrith - Clifton Hall Pele'

2 miles south of Penrith on the A6.

Location : Eamont Bridge
Map - Ordnance Survey - NY 532271

Clifton Hall Pele. Pic F21P6.

Clifton Hall is a small pele tower which stands on its own beside a farmyard. It does not have the usual massive walls, so it is thought it was built in the late 16th Century when the danger from the Scots was less than in previous centuries. The tower measures 33 ft by 26 ft and has three stories, the ground floor being divided into a number of rooms. The windows are larger than in older peles, and there is a newel stair in the south-west corner leading to the upper rooms and roof.

Other buildings were attached to the tower, but these were destroyed long ago. Information plates show the layout of these buildings, and show what the hall and tower may have looked like when it was in use.

It is open at all times. No charge.

Clifton Hall is in the care of English Heritage
