Outward Bound Centres in Cumbria

The Outward Bound organisation is the most famous of all adventure brand names, and is worldwide with centres in more than 30 countries. It is the organization that fiercely guards the right of young people to have access to safe adventure experiences through which they realize their potential.

It has two centres in the Lake District:

Eskdale

Gatehouse.

Built in 1896 as a secluded retreat, Gatehouse in Eskdale became The Outward Bound Mountain School in 1950. The centre has a country house feel offering a high standard of facilities and immediate access to some of the best walking and climbing in the country.

Ullswater

ullswater outward bound centre

This is a Georgian mansion on the north shore of Ullswater near Watermillock, set amidst 18 acres of woodland at the heart of Wordsworth country. Participants may canoe or kayak on the lake to or from the Centre, enjoy a stay in our high mountain lodge, nestling under Helvellyn - one of the Lake District's highest peaks with its well know rocky Striding and Swirral edges. Outward Bound Ullswater also includes rock climbing on most and caving on some of its courses.
