One of the most accessable tarns - the road from Ambleside to Coniston goes right past it, with a small car park beside the tarn. The landowner, James Marshall, built a dam at the south end in the 1930's, and stocked the tarn with trout. Fishing for brown and rainbow trout is controlled by the Coniston and Torver Angling Association.
