Illuminating the Wall began at dusk with a public event at Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend, North Tyneside.
The first light was illuminated at 5.45pm as the Line of Light started its epic journey westwards, reaching the Cumbrian coast around one hour later.
As the light made its way across the country Carlisle prepared to 'welcome the light', as it arrived in Cumbria. Lit by thousands of flickering flames, a parade of costumed characters and musicians made its way through the streets of Carlisle to greet the line of light.
On the afternoon of saturday 13th March 2010, my colleague Jan Fialkowski and I travelled to Pike Hill Signal Tower, between Birdoswald Fort and Brampton, to photograph this spectacular event, where we met folk from all over the country. It certainly captured their imagination, and all were thrilled to be there.

Major traffic jams after the event - too many cars on a very narrow road.
