Gates open at 09:00, events start at 10:00

Dating from 1868, Grasmere Sports has run every year except during the periods of the First and Second World Wars and the Covid pandemic. It has its origin in the annual Grasmere Sheep Fairs of the mid 19th Century, then very much a notable local community event on the annual calendar.

Today Grasmere Sports welcomes visitors and locals alike and some of the main draws are the famous Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling, hound trailing and fell running.

This year Grasmere Sports returns after a two year absence and the Directors are delighted to be able to promote the 2022 Sports – where the emphasis will be on encouraging everyone to take part in the many activities available on the day.

One of the highlights for 2022 is hosting the Under 10’s Wrestling World Championship and having the opportunity to encourage the youngest wrestlers. Male and female wrestlers of all ages and weights will compete throughout the day and there is even time to judge the ‘best wrestling costume’ too.

The sporting theme is continued with sprint and track races, long leap and fun races for children. There is a very popular fun dog show and no Sports is complete without live music, this year being performed by the Fat Cat Brass Band.

Local history, sheep and craft makers will all be showcased to visitors in the local history area. With catering, trade stands and a craft marquee – this is a day out for all the family.

The fell running, or Guides, races are the climax of the day, when up to 200 runners, set off from the Sports Field, cross the A591, and head off up the crag opposite. Visitors can watch the pack climb the fell, run along the summit before they wind their way back down the hill to the Sports Field. The record, set by Fred Reeves in 1978 is 12 minutes and 21 seconds.

A thoroughly traditional event that showcases the best of Lakeland traditions and is hugely popular with serious competitors and families alike.

Facilities are widespread with a good selection of refreshments, exhibitions and trade stands.
