Bushcraft for Kids in the North Lakes
We like this because : What’s not to like about lighting camp fires, whittling with penknives, building “dens”, toasting marshmallows and roasting (grey) squirrels – all in the forest?
What’s it all about? : All very Ray Mears – Keswick Canoe & Bushcraft run various half days teaching fun but serious bushcraft skills in the brilliant Whinlatter Forest (think Fangorn rather than Lothlorien).
You can choose from – ‘Wild Food & Campfire Cooking‘ (this is where the grey squirrels come in), ‘Shelter Build, Flint & Steel & Roasted Marshmallows’ (yum!) – ‘Trees, Twigs, Tinder & Fire by Friction’ – ‘Safe Knife Work & Whittling’ or a full day ‘Introduction to Bushcraft’.
It’s hard to find somewhere you are allowed to light campfires in the wild Lake District and this teaches you both how to do it safely – and that is Sooo important here – and properly, the survival way.
How old do I have to be? : You can do ‘Shelter Build, Flint & Steel & Roasted Marshmallows’ if you are 8 or more, for the rest you need to be 12 or over.
Also look out for : Whinlatter WildPlay Kids assault course and Go Ape are here as well. Paul & Claire who run these Bushcraft days also do Canoe Bushcraft days on Derwentwater.
Tips : You need your grown up with you for this.
How much is it? : Most half days are £25 each person, ‘Wild Food & Campfire Cooking’ is £35.
