The small village of Grinsdale is beside the River Eden as it flows towards it mouth at Bowness-on-Solway. Beside the river is St Kentigern's church, built in 1740, and hidden in the trees in the top left of the picture.

Hadrian's Wall Path passes through the village.

To the left of the picture is Lanercost Priory founded about 1166 by Henry II, and now the local Parish church, and an English Heritage ruin.

On the right is the old bridge over the River Irthing, which was constructed around the year 1724.

Monkhill is a small hamlet between Grinsdale and Kirkandrews-on-Eden.

Upper Denton
Upper Denton.

Upper Denton is a small hamlet near Gilsland, with a small, humble church.
