The Dock Museum for Kids
Where is it? : Brilliant location in Barrow-in-Furness right opposite BAE ship building hall where they build submarines.
Telephone : 01229 876400
We like it because : Viking treasure, great wacky building with loads of space, ships & boats and all things ships, replica Viking longboat.
What’s it all about? : This is a really interesting museum built on an original Victorian dock with a lot about ships and boats and the history of the docks and shipbuilding.
What really grabbed us though was the new Conquest Gallery where they have cave finds, bronze and iron age objects and the Furness Hoard – 92 pieces of Viking treasure found by a local metal detector – and other Viking stuff.
Also look out for : The Palaeolithic flint, it is the earliest tool found in Cumbria and was made about 12,000 years ago!!
Tips : Open Wednesday to Sunday 11am – 4 pm, the last admission to the museum is at 3.30 pm.
How much is it? : It’s free.
